For our first news article we thought we’d introduce you to a member of our team...

This week, we’re going to introduce you to our General Manager, John. John joined the team in 2021 having spent most of his working life in the motor trade and even a period volunteering for Staffordshire Police as a Special Constable. As General Manager, under the watchful eye of Iain and Neil, John oversees the general day to day running of the business, although mainly concentrating on production and the trials and tribulations that accompany the bespoke nature of our products. If you’ve called the office, it stands a good chance you will have spoken to him and he even ventures out on deliveries… from time to time!

Without further ado, let’s learn a little more about the man himself!

John, are you an early bird, or a night Owl?

These days, neither! If my kids haven’t woken me up by half past 5, my body or alarm clock certainly will have done, but it’s most definitely not through choice! In the evening, I can barely keep my eyes open past 9pm. I can’t even remember what it was like staying up late anymore! Rock and roll, hey?

Do you have any hobbies?

Currently, no. I used to, believe it or not, be a member of a WW2 re-enactment group and I do miss it, but it’s very time consuming and expensive! I do sometimes play computer games, but these days I am quite content spending any spare time with my wife and kids.

What is your favourite sport to watch or play?

I’m not a huge sports fan any more to be honest. I will watch the occasional football match if it’s on terrestrial TV, like the FA Cup, although I refuse to watch international football. I had a season ticket at Old Trafford for the 2012/2013 season (Fergie’s last season) and saw United win the Premier League. Thankfully I lost a lot of interest after that!

What advice would you give to your teenage self?

Wow, I’m not sure we’ve got enough time for me to answer this question! For a start, if I could collar my 13-year-old self, I’d give him a clip round the ear, tell him to stop being a class clown and to start paying more attention at school. I loved making people laugh, but it doesn’t offer much of a career path, or pay the bills in later life unfortunately… unless you’re a comedian of course!

Finally, what’s one totally irrational fear that you have?

I don’t think I have any irrational fears, as such – I think my fears are commonplace… My main fear is spiders, followed closely in second place by large bodies of open/deep water. I’m not so scared enough that I can’t go on a boat or anything, but I find ‘dark’ water very daunting!

Thanks, John! Next time we’ll be looking at where our raw materials come from and shedding some light on the acronyms ‘FSC and PEFC’ .
